There’s something about the first day of school that makes a neighborhood feel especially alive. Backpacks appear at breakfast tables. New sneakers appear on feet. Parents snap the obligatory first-day photo, and children head off to meet new teachers, reconnect with friends and begin another year of growing up.

Community ISD
Located in Lavon, Elevon is part of Community Independent School District, a fast-growing district serving families throughout this corner of Collin County.
Elevon students from prekindergarten through high school are served by Community ISD, where opportunities extend across academics, athletics, fine arts, advanced academics and career preparation. The district offers programs that include dual credit, P-TECH Early College High School and a range of Career and Technical Education pathways.
And as both the district and Elevon continue to grow, something especially exciting is already in the works. Elevon’s master plan calls for two elementary schools within the community itself.
A School Becomes Part of the Neighborhood
Think about what an elementary school within your own community can mean to everyday family life. Instead of school being somewhere you must drive to reach, it can become another familiar neighborhood destination, just like the park, playground or trail.
The morning trip to school may someday begin with walking out the front door rather than joining a long line of cars. Children can encounter classmates along the way. Community ISD is already moving forward with plans for an Elevon elementary campus. The district has included Elevon Elementary in its long-range facility planning and has approved schematic design work as it prepares for continued enrollment growth. Elevon’s broader community plan identifies two proposed elementary school sites.
This is just one more example of what master planned communities can accomplish. Bringing the places families use most often closer to the homes where they live.
The Simple Pleasure of Walking to School
For generations, walking to school was simply a part of childhood. Somewhere along the way, longer commutes, larger school attendance areas and car-dependent development made that experience less common.
There are good reasons to welcome it back.
The CDC’s “Safe Routes to School” research notes that walking or bicycling to school provides children with another opportunity for regular physical activity, while communities designed with safe pedestrian connections can encourage more families to choose to walk.
Some of the advantages are harder to measure. Walking to school provides a little transition between home and the classroom. There’s time to talk. Time to notice the weather. Time for children to spot friends ahead and hurry to catch up with them. On the way home, there’s a chance to tell Mom or Dad what happened that day before everyone moves on to homework, dinner, and evening activities. Those small daily moments add up!
Walking also puts people outside, where neighbors are more likely to see one another. A wave becomes a conversation. Parents meet other parents. Children begin to recognize the people who live around them. Over time, the route to school can become part of the social fabric of a neighborhood.
Interestingly, Community ISD itself emphasizes walkability as it begins the 2026-27 school year. Following improvements to pedestrian paths in several Lavon-area neighborhoods, the district approved new school walk zones for the coming year. That emphasis feels particularly well suited to Elevon, where trails, green spaces and pedestrian connections are already an important part of the community plan.
Growing Along with Community ISD
Community ISD is growing alongside the communities it serves, and its long-range planning reflects that growth. According to Community ISD, Elevon Elementary is among the future campuses identified as the district plans for continued enrollment growth. The district’s elementary-school model is designed around campuses serving approximately 750 students, a size it considers healthy and manageable for younger students.
For families considering a new home, this type of forward planning matters. Schools are not simply a location on a map. They help shape a family’s schedule, friendships, extracurricular activities and the sense of connection children develop with the place they call home. When a school is located within the community, those connections have the potential to become even stronger.
